We are getting close to the end of the 7 sins. Today, we examine, Lust. If you’re just tuning in, make sure to check out Pride, Envy, Sloth and Wrath.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary denotes Lust as an intense sexual desire or appetite.
From the definition above, one would consider this sin innocuous in the dating scene. What is wrong with being sexually active while looking for Love? Plenty!
Indulging in one-night stands and/or having a “friend with benefits” without the emotional component renders the task of recognizing when someone is right for you more difficult. Lust and Love are often mistaken one for the other at the beginning of a relationship. Intimacy becomes a challenge.
The Downside of Lust
In dating, lust has two principal consequences:
1) We deny our more fragile side, never allowing ourselves to expose failures, errors, and struggles.
2) Emotional growth and intimacy are avoided.
Lust focuses on the “here and now” and the overwhelm need for immediate satisfaction. You do not show much interest in the person as a whole and really do not care how their day went, what their favorite song, movie or food is. You would rather devote energy to having a good time.
Relationships, on the other hand, demand dedication, and effort to develop and produce results. They require long-term goals, commitment, nurturing to grow. It is a labor of love.
Lust and dating are not at opposite sides of the spectrum, however. They are more like “kissing cousins.”
Passion and lust are necessary to develop your relationship. At the same time, you need the love/commitment for what you are building to keep both you on the path when road bumps hit the relation.
Lust, Intimacy and Venus
