The Water Element and Saturn
Saturn is not comfortable in Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Here, Saturn often shows a fear of one’s feelings.
Stephen Arroyo indicates in his book, “Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements”, Saturn in water signs can indicate a severe degree of emotional repression, where people with this placement over-react to anything and tie themselves up in knots when having to depict any kind of emotion.
The person expresses herself in distinct ways. She appears cold and unfeeling, or, just the opposite, and becomes overly sensitive.
Two Distinctive Modes of Expression
In the first case, Watery Saturn tries his best to conceal his delicate nature, and adopts a protective attitude to defend his emotions from anyone or anything. He tends to be cautious about expressing any sentiment, for fear of becoming vulnerable.
The person’s instinctive reaction when faced with an emotional crisis is to repress his natural feelings and control them. For him or her, the goal is to avoid establishing a relationship where he becomes exposed, dependent on somebody. The fear is to develop a “soul” level connection with another person and reveal the depths of his limitations, weaknesses, and desires. Such openness would create profound and intense ties. Saturn much prefers not to divulge anything rather than become vulnerable and at the mercy of somebody else’s feelings.
On the opposite spectrum, Saturn in Cancer, Scorpio, or, Pisces can manifest a tendency to be exceedingly emotional, over-reacting to any situation in an attempt to redress the balance and regain control. Here, the Saturn in water person expresses her emotions in gross, infantile compulsive manner:
- In Cancer, as clingy, possessive, clannish and fearful;
- In Scorpio as fanaticism of the dark, heavy, brooding kind;
- And in Pisces as gushing sentimentality of the extreme sort which can show up as malicious gossip or, backbiting.
Unconscious Motivation and Saturn Structure
In her book – Saturn a New Look at an Old Devil -, Liz Greene points out the issue with Saturn in watery signs stems from the fact that Saturn wants to give form to something hidden – the motivation behind the emotions experienced: “Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces and their corresponding houses—the fourth, eighth, and twelfth—are directly concerned with emotion and with motivations, which lie below the surface of consciousness. Saturn in any of these signs or houses is extremely elusive because the average individual is rarely aware of the unconscious emotional frustration which lies behind his actions; he only knows that he is isolated and emotionally vulnerable, if he knows even that much.”
Thus, someone with this placement is faced with a push-and-pull situation. While not a bad idea to have some structure and boundaries, when it comes to emotional expression, the Saturnian energy is too restrictive for this element. The person is hampered and unable to react to people and situations in the appropriate way, since Saturn has a hard time understanding the reasons for such extremes behaviors.
The Saturn Lesson for Water Signs
With Saturn in Cancer, Scorpio and, Pisces, the person must learn three things:
- Stabilize her emotions and sensitivities while avoiding becoming cold and remote;
- Channel her emotional power in a constructive way by learning to acknowledge and utilize this ability with clarity of perception and rationality of manner;
- Protect herself from outside negative influences without closing off.
