Saturn in Fire Signs: Impeding Self-Expression
Saturn is ill at ease in the fire element. The unbridled, aggressive, and impulsive energy of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius contrasts with the cautious and structured output of Saturn. The Saturnian need for regularity, objectivity, and responsibility does not mesh well with spontaneous self-expression.
In any social occasion, Fire signs love to be on stage and the center of attention. The reason for this behavior stems from their strong awareness of who they are and their limitless vitality, self-confidence and enthusiasm for the joys life. Simply put, they cannot prevent themselves from expressing their sense of grandness, larger-than-life quality, and the fact each individual possess something special and exalted beyond the common or mundane.
On the other hand, Saturn is known for the limitations and restrictions he imposes in the chart. In this element, Saturn inhibits self-expression and arouses doubts concerning one’s capacity for creativity.
Liz Greene states in her book “Saturn a New Look at an Old Devil” that “Saturn in the fiery signs tends to suggest a barrier between the conscious personality and the intuitive perception of the self as it ordinarily is experienced by fire.”
The Battle Opposing Spontaneity and Purpose
This often creates in the individual a tug-of-war between the desire to express his innate sense of destiny and Saturn’s constant nay saying.
In day-to-day life, the result can be disastrous for the native. Saturn produces a lack of spontaneity and self-expression, and generates low vitality. However, the greatest proclivity of this placement is a deep-seated belief in its own insignificance coupled with a strong sense of despair arousing from a feeling of purposelessness.
For the 3 fire signs, this is a tragedy. Each of them looses a vital part of their identity, more so than the other elements. Remember, Saturn is in his fall in Aries and in detriment in Leo and only performs slightly better in Sagittarius.
Aries is prevented from expressing his urge to explore and conquer, Leo to create and love, and Sagittarius to expand and understand the world he lives in.
The Lessons of Saturn
Yet, Saturn’s goal is to help ground the natural tendency for self-expression, give this energy a purpose. Often times, the urge for spontaneity and creative manifestation of the self, exhibited by the fire signs is done in a willy-nilly fashion with no real goal or accomplishment; and, therefore turns into self-centeredness, a common trait of all 3 placements.
In her book, Liz Greene suggests that Saturn’s lesson for Aries is to develop the will in a purposeful manner, which includes accepting responsibility for their actions, direct the Arian energy to useful activities, and overcome their tendency to childish and egocentric behavior.
For Leo, Saturn seeks to enhance creativity with a sense of objective love rooted in loyal and disciplined affection. The goal is to develop trust in their inborn value and goodness and avoid the pitfalls of pride and selfishness.
Saturn’s task in Sagittarius is to channel enthusiasm and energy towards understanding their intuitive perception and wisdom, in order to formulate one’s ideals, beliefs, and aspirations in a clear manner. This placement also speaks of unburden oneself from traditional values and fears preventing the pursuit of a higher truth.
