Saturn in Earth Signs Characteristics
The grounded, practical, tangible energy of earth signs blends well with Saturn’s mode of operation. Thus, one can achieve much in terms of material wealth, financial security, and professional recognition.
However, Saturn is not quite as happy as assumed.
Liz Greene points out in her book Saturn, a New Look at an Old Devil, the elements often indicate where the individual is tied up in knots and has a difficulty in mastering the area of life pertaining to said element. She states, “Saturn is frightened of the responsibility of ownership because he knows the pain of losing that which he owns, yet he is compulsively drawn toward collecting more and more.”
The Fear of Losing Security
In other words, in Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, Saturn fears having to give up what he works so hard to obtain; money, resources, safety, work, or career achievements. An inherent reluctance in dealing with mundane affairs, daily responsibilities exists in these placements.
An individual with this placement struggles again and again with limitations surrounding his ability to support himself, develop competency and, skills, which would allow him to find meaningful work and achieve authority and responsibility. The confines take form of the inner critic, the one constantly telling you why you can’t do something, are not good enough, or, quite perfect.
The Battle to Let Go
Faced with criticism, an earthy Saturn reacts by not letting go of anything, which, sometimes, leads to hoarding habits. Greediness and accumulation of wealth are also possible manifestations.
The struggle can likewise come from the opposite side of this spectrum; declaring possessions bad, evil, or worthless, accompanied by the denial of all forms of comfort and desires.
Every aspect of the material world is therefore judged out fear stemming from 3 different and commingled sources:
- the repressed and overwhelming desire to be rich,
- a lack of self-esteem that makes one believe they do not deserve to have it,
- a childhood with too much emphasis on material values.
In her book, Liz Greene goes on saying the doorway to conquer this blockage is learning to control the physical world via discipline and efficiency.
The Lesson of Saturn for Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn
The pathway would be, in my opinion, two-folds. One, learn perspective, as the earth element shows little of this quality. Remember, Saturn in exalted in Libra and dignified in Aquarius, two air signs, indicating a certain detachment from our fears, in particular those tied to our sense of security and well-being, is necessary in order to help us grow.
For an earthy Saturn, it can means something as simple as asking themselves if the material wealth they choose to build on indeed reflect their real values, or whether consumerism is a good substitute for a deeper need, like creativity, friendship and love.
Second, understand that transformation and letting go are part of nature’s rhythm, something Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are attuned too. On the other hand, those are the signs known to stick to their ways and refuse to change.
In the end, the lesson to be learned is one of mastering one’s efficiency and precision in handling daily responsabilities.
